Event Overview
With the advent of the 21st century, multimedia products with a mix of digital technology and art already exists in the daily lives of common people and a gigantic multimedia industry has developed.
Although China's multimedia industry started ten years later than their foreign counterparts, China has shown strong stamina, and has already developed an industry chain within the digital medium as a carrier, with a core of image, cartoon and graphics technology. The content of the chain covers features like information, transmission, advertisement, telecommunication, E-entertainment and online education. According to relevant analysis reports, it is expected that the production value of China's multimedia industry will hit RMB 400 billion by 2005, 900 billion by 2008 and 1.5 trillion by 2010, making it the first pillar industry.
Since 2000, the Municipal Government of Shanghai began to actively advocate the development of the multimedia industry. The science and technology commission of Shanghai municipality approved the establishment of two multimedia technology parks in succession, has set up several multimedia aid funds, and built the multimedia public service platform of Shanghai municipality, thereby constructing a good industrial environment for the multimedia industry.
Over two years, many world-famous enterprises from a dozen countries have settled in the Shanghai multimedia park and formed the preliminary industrial structure with a core of multimedia digital production and multimedia expo demonstration. Currently, Shanghai boasts over ten million cell phone users, one million broadband users, three million CATV users, and two and a half million optical fiber users, so the broadband environment has already formed, but there is a lack of content demanded by the network. The digital contents of film, television, games, advertisements and courseware production will be the key criteria for the development of Shanghai's IT sector in the future. The success of bidding for the 2010 world expo brings about another great development opportunity for Shanghai. 200 digital exhibition halls will be built in Shanghai; 300 traditional science popularization museums will be revamped.
Needless to say, the construction of the digital museums and the demand for large-scale multimedia projects and expo demonstration technology provides a great platform for the hosting of Shanghai Multimedia 2005, which will generate huge market and business opportunities in multimedia industry.
